Melbourne International Coffee Expo 2015

Melbourne International Coffee Expo 2015

The Melbourne International Coffee Expo (or MICE) is to coffee professionals and hipsters what Mecca is to Muslims; a holy pilgrimage to a city renowned the world over for its art, culture and of course coffee.  Melbourne is truly the perfect setting for an event such as MICE. Down every graffiti encrusted alleyway you are almost guaranteed to find a small semi-secret cafe slinging some of the best brews you've ever had. Just walking down the main streets in the CBD I would overhear snippets of conversation relating to the latest single origin on offer at the coolest new spot. Even businessmen and women rushing off to meetings proudly carry their hand-stamped takeaway cups bearing names such as Axil and Code Black; in Melbourne the type of coffee you drink is worn like a badge of honour. For Melbournians coffee is more than a drink, it is a social scene, a Bohemia, even a subculture; for many (including myself) it is an obsession.

2013 Australian Barista Competition. Melbourne, March 1-3

2013 Australian Barista Competition. Melbourne, March 1-3

“Now is the best time to be a barista in Australia. We have access to an ever growing array of delicious speciality coffees, and those coffees are at their most engaging and at their most revealing and through the years we have forged meaningful connections with those at the beginning of the chain, so these days as a barista, I feel like our work is not just to make beautiful coffee but also be custodian of something that someone far away began with a whole lot of care and a whole lot of dedication”

Gourmet Escape

Gourmet Escape

We were lucky enough to spend last weekend at the magnificent Leeuwin Estate Winery as part of the inaugural fine food and wine event - Gourmet Escape. I love the Margaret River region, with it’s awesome beaches and great wineries it’s one of my favourite places to spend time, so I jumped at the chance to be able to combine coffee along with all our other passions together at the Gourmet Escape.

2012 AASCA Western Australian Barista Championships

2012 AASCA Western Australian Barista Championships

The latte art competition would get us underway as each of the 5 competitors prepared to present two identical pieces of art in 3 different types of beverage (latte, macchiato, and a signature beverage). It was a close competition and only one thing was for certain: we would be crowning a new champion as Kaya McCarthy (the 2010 and 2011 winner of the event) would be focusing her energy on running the competition rather than competing. In the end it was Roy from Coast Coffee Cafe (Dimattina Coffee) who would hold his nerve and take out the title. An outstanding effort given that this was his first competition and he was only made aware of the event 2 weeks prior to competing! Roy came on board with Dimattina Coffee around 12 months ago and its fantastic to see him take his coffee making and latte art skills to the next level with the encouragement and support of the team. With that continued support we look forward to watching him compete for WA at the nationals next year.
